“Lisbon Story, Architecture between Atmosphere and Tectonics” is an intervention connecting the city of Lisbon to the Castle of Sao Jorge. The existing castle entry is a winding path through nearby streets. The proposal aims to create a proper entry for thousands of locals and tourists who visit the castle each year. The site measures 20 meters by 50 meters on a sloped terrain adjacent to the castle platform. Program elements include a ticket office, cafe, restaurant, and an outdoor reading room. The process of materializing the intervention includes working physical models, iterative sections, and atmospheric images depicting materiality, scale, and light within the space desired.

Inspiration for the proposal is taken from the ground level experience of Lisbon. For the individual, local and tourist, sloped streets and roads are a public experience. The proposal in place transforms the public route to the castle into a coordinated intimate journey. Similar to walking in the streets of Lisbon, the visitor experiences narrow pathways open to the Lisbon sky. Along the path, there is the option of traveling directly to the castle or stopping at one of the three primary spaces; cafe, restaurant, or outdoor reading room. Each space addresses sunlight differently through a roof topology connecting the primary space with a wrapping corridor.
